Library Computers Policy

Library Public Computer Use Policy

New Mexico State University – Alamogordo Townsend Library provides computer access to students, staff, faculty, and members of the public. The majority of the library computers are intended for the use of currently enrolled students and current NMSU faculty and staff.

Procedures:

  • Unlimited use is available for anyone with university credentials.
  • In times of high volume, students using the computers for recreational, and non-academic use may be limited.
  • All community patron computers are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Community patrons must have a current library card to gain access to the computers.
  • If there is a wait for computers, community patrons will be limited to 1 hour on the computer.
  • Before accessing community patron computers, patrons must sign in on the computer log sheet at the circulation desk.
  • Priority is given to NMSU students for class assignments. In times of high volume, students, staff, or faculty may need to access the community patron computers. If this happens, we will ask users who have been on the computer the longest to sign off based on the sign-in sheet.
  • Parents or legal guadians are responsible for their children’s use of the internet and what the child might see on another screen.
  • Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by their parents/legal guardians and cannot be left alone on a computer.
  • Installing software or changing settings on the computer is prohibited.
  • Anything you may have added to the hard drive will be erased when the computer is turned off. Users can save their documents on their own storage devices.
  • Library computer equipment and software must be used in a responsible manner. Excessive sound levels, deliberate misuse, hacking, introduction of computer viruses, or any other inappropriate uses are not permitted.
  • Computers will be shut down 15 minutes prior to closing time (5 p.m.) and all print jobs must be completed and reported to the circulation desk at this time.
  • Problems with the computers must be reported to Townsend staff immediately. Do not attempt to fix the problem yourself.
  • Personal cell phones must be kept silent. Any phone calls must be taken in the front lobby or outside the front doors.
