Alternative Spaces

Study Rooms 

Townsend library has four private study rooms and many open areas throughout the facility for study space. Noise should be kept to a minimum. This includes quiet conversation and silencing cell phones. All study areas are first come first serve to all patrons. Reservations for the study rooms are considered on a case by case basis by the library director.  

  •  Private study rooms are equipped with smart TVs and can be used by students, faculty, and staff only. Equipment must be signed for at the circulation desk before use. Using NMSU-A credentials to sign in is required. No more than four people are allowed in each of the rooms. Noise volume from conversation, Zoom meetings, cell phones, etc. must be kept at a minimum. 

Classroom 

The library has a large classroom equipped with computers for instructional classes. Instructors can reserve this room as needed by contacting the Library Director. This classroom is also used by the Library for guided instruction on the use of library databases and the library website. These classes can be scheduled by any instructor by contacting the library director.  

Conference Room  

The conference room at the library can safely accommodate up to 10 people. A TV and computer can be set up if needed for presentations, Zoom meetings, etc. This room can be requested for use by contacting the library director.  

Talk Boxes

The Talk Box is a welcoming, sound-controlled space located within the library, designed for both students and members of the public to engage in conversation, collaboration, and idea sharing without disturbing the quiet study areas.

This semi-private booth provides a comfortable setting for:

  • Group discussions and collaborative projects

  • Tutoring sessions and mentoring

  • Interviews and small meetings

  • Relaxed conversation between friends or colleagues

Equipped with acoustic panels to minimize noise, the Talk Box allows you to speak freely while maintaining the peaceful environment of the library. Whether you’re working on a class project, networking, or simply catching up with friends, the Talk Box offers a convenient and inclusive spot for open dialogue.

 

Multi Sensory Room 

The Multi-Sensory Room is a dedicated, student, staff and faculty space designed to promote relaxation, focus, and well-being. This specially equipped room offers a soothing environment with features that engage the senses—such as calming lights, soft seating, tactile objects, and gentle sounds—to help students manage stress and recharge during their day.

Ideal for students seeking a quiet, supportive space to unwind, the Multi-Sensory Room encourages mindfulness and emotional balance while providing privacy and comfort within the library.
