Looking for Work-Study Positions

What is it?

Work-Study is a way for students to earn money through part-time on-campus jobs. The program gives students an opportunity to gain valuable work experience while pursuing a college degree.

What are the benefits?

  1. Keep what you earn.
    You don’t have to pay it back. Work-Study is a part-time job. This money is earned.
  2. Your paycheck won’t affect your Financial Aid eligibility.
    You have to report your Work-Study earnings on the FAFSA, but they won’t count against you in the calculation that determines your award.
  3. Work-Study jobs are convenient.
    Work is scheduled around your class schedule.
  4. Get workplace experience while earning money.
    Some jobs may be in your field of study. Learn marketable skills. Good work performance can generate good work references. Can provide good networking opportunities.

Basic Eligibility Requirements:

The Financial Aid Office provides information for work-Study positions on and off campus.

Work-Study Eligibility

  • Complete a FAFSA and demonstrate financial need
  • Have completed the admissions process
  • Enrolled as a degree-seeking student
  • Enrolled in 6 credit hours as an undergraduate student
  • Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)

How to Apply for Work-study

The Financial Aid office will automatically offer work-study funding if you qualify to your my.nmsu account. Please see 'Retrieving your Award Letter' section to continue the process. If you do not see an offer, please contact our department at finaidnmsua@nmsu.edu or 575.439.3600.

Looking for Work-Study Positions

  • After a student has been offered and accepted their work-study funding, they can begin searching and applying for position through our Human Resources department.
  • You can contact NMSU-Alamogordo Human Resources at hrnmsua@nmsu.edu or stop by their offices, located on the 1st floor of the Student Services building.
  • Attach your Award Letter to your email or have a print out of your Award Letter when visiting with Human Resources.

Students can download the Handshake App from the appropriate app store or use the NMSU Handshake website when looking for available work-study positions that are offered throughout the NMSU system for on-campus department and at some off-campus agencies.

Retrieving your Award Letter:

1. Log in to your myNMSU account

2. Select Financial Aid

3. Click ‘Offer’ tab

4. Under your offers, accept the Work-Study offer amount for your academic year/term

5. Print or screenshot this webpage to show your acceptance of work-study funds

6. Have supervisor sign the award letter and return to NMSU-Alamogordo HR Office.
