Tuition Assistance Policies

Federal Tuition Assistance (TA)

The Department of Defense (DoD) has given each service the ability to pay up to $250 per semester credit hour of the actual cost of tuition (no Fees) during the fiscal year (1, October-30, September). TA will pay for up to 130 semester hours of a bachelor’s degree and up to 39 semester hours of a master’s degree. TA is authorized for one certificate or diploma.

To start using TA please contact your local Education Office.

Service members cannot use TA for a second equivalent or lower degree, i.e., no second bachelor’s or master’s degree. TA cannot be used for professional degrees, e.g., Ph.D., MD, or JD.

Tuition Assistance Top-Up

Using Top-Up benefits may be an option if you plan to use Tuition Assistance (TA) to complete a degree program while on active duty, and don't plan to continue your education after service. Top-Up can also be helpful for just taking a few courses with TA while on active duty; then you can save most of your GI BIll benefits for after service to complete your education program.

Instead, contact the Military and Veterans Programs at 575.646.4526 or mvp@nmsu.edu. After enrolling in a class, if you need to drop it for any reason, you must process your drop in both ArmyIgnitED and NMSU systems in accordance with institutional policies and procedures. Please see the refund schedules.
