Requesting Accommodations: What You Need to Know

If you’re a student who needs academic or campus accommodations, the Accessibility Services Department (ASD) is here to support you. To get started, you’ll complete a simple three‑step process:

1. Submit Your Request

Fill out the New Student Application using your NMSU username and password. When asked, choose NMSU Alamogordo as your primary campus.

2. Provide Your Documentation

As part of the application, you’ll upload documentation that verifies your disability and explains why accommodations are needed. If you don’t already have documentation, no worries — you can give your healthcare provider the Verification Form to complete and then upload that as your documentation.

3. Meet With ASD

Once your application is reviewed, the ASD office will contact you to schedule an intake appointment. This meeting is your chance to talk about your experiences, ask questions, and explore which accommodations may best support your success.

What Counts as Documentation?

To approve accommodations, ASD must receive documentation that:

  • Clearly explains the nature and extent of your disability

  • Shows the need for each accommodation you’re requesting

  • Comes from a qualified professional who is licensed or certified to diagnose your condition

  • Is recent enough to reflect your current needs in academic or campus settings

Important: IEPs and Section 504 plans by themselves are not enough. However, the full evaluation report used to create those plans is acceptable.
